Water Route

Riverine Treasures

The Tejo and Zezere Rivers are two rivers that cross this legendary region of the Templars. From the earliest times to the present day they have had a central importance in the strategic cultural and economic development of the region. Bathed by the now calm waters of these rivers ora revoltas when the climacteric situation is avdversa were growing along their water lines population clusters that were settling here and that taking advantage of the natural resources of the river, here they were launching their roots giving rise to what We will call it Riverine Treasures.
Our suggestion is therefore to start as an unforgettable visit to the Castle of Almourol, after the visit is followed by a visit to the beautiful and quiet town of Constancia, the name of "Vila Poema", for having lived there for a certain period of his life. Known poet Luis Vaz de Camões.

We suggest to make a lunch break here, taking advantage of the excellent gastronomy of the restaurants of the region. Then we suggest a visit to the Castle of Abrantes where you can enjoy a magnificent view in 360 degrees after which we will go to the nice municipality of Vila de Rei, place where is located the Portuguese Center of Portugal and land of fantastic natural landscapes where the Shale reigns as king and lord. As final destination of travel we will visit the county of Ferreira do Zêzere to visit Dornes, one of the most beautiful and historical villages in this region, a kind of peninsula located in the Albufeira de Castelo de Bode. Dominating the predominantly white low houses is the medieval tower, which is thought to have been built by the Knights Templar to guard the deep valley of Zêzere. The foundation of the village dates back to the 12th century and is linked to the appearance of a miraculous image of Our Lady of Sorrow.

About visit sites

Situated on an islet in the middle of the Tagus River, Almourol Castle is one of the most emblematic monuments that can be found in Portugal, for its meaning and the surrounding landscape.

Located at the confluence of two rivers, the Tejo and the Zêzere Constância have a characteristic physiognomy that is given to it by the white houses harmoniously implanted on a slope.

It was its geographical location that shaped the characteristics of this village, XIV was an important river port and a busy commercial warehouse.

The Castle of Abrantes is a fortress formed by medieval fortifications and abaluartadas. The medieval castle conserves the Tower of Menagem and some cloths of wall with round turrets. To highlight the vaulted spaces with brick.

If you imagine a line crossing Portugal from North to South of Portugal, and another between East and West, Vila de Rei is located strictly in the geodesic center of the country, a fact that is marked in a Picoto placed in the Serra da Melriça,

Unusually for its pentagonal plan, the Tower of the village of Dornes was erected by the Templars on the banks of the Zêzere River to guard and defend the region during the Christian Reconquest.

Built in shale and limestone on the base of an ancient Roman tower, the Tower bears various warrior symbols on the doorway that testify to its military function. In the century XVI, in more peaceful times, was adapted to the bell tower of the mother church, which is next to it.
